An Australian woman has been charged with poisoning her one-year-old daughter and sharing videos of the infant in distress to solicit donations through GoFundMe, police and local media reported on Thursday.
The 34-year-old allegedly went to "great lengths" to hide that she was administering prescription and over-the-counter drugs to the baby without medical authorization, according to Queensland detective inspector Paul Dalton.
Hospital staff in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital, raised concerns in October last year when the child was undergoing treatment for a serious medical condition, Dalton stated. Police acted swiftly to protect the baby and initiated an investigation.
Although police did not officially confirm the relationship, local media widely identified the woman as the baby’s mother.
Between August and October last year, the woman allegedly recorded and shared images of the child in "immense distress and pain" to garner financial support from online followers, Dalton explained.
This month, tests reportedly confirmed the presence of unauthorized medications in the child’s system, according to police.
The woman, from Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, was charged on Thursday with 11 offenses.
“There are no words to describe just how repulsive offenses of this nature are,” Dalton remarked. “There is no justification for harming a child, especially one so young and entirely reliant on adults for care and love.”
Authorities allege the woman raised over AUD 60,000 (approximately USD 37,000) through GoFundMe. The platform is now working to reimburse donors, Dalton added.
She is set to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
