UK-Based Nigerian Man Replaces Allegedly Stolen Items for Kemi Badenoch’s Brother
A United Kingdom-based Nigerian, James Akinwande, has replaced a pair of shoes and a wristwatch that Kemi Badenoch claimed were stolen from her brother by officers of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Badenoch, a prominent UK Conservative Party leader, made the allegation during a December 2024 interview, describing the incident as an example of police misconduct in Nigeria.
“My experience with the police in Nigeria was very negative, but in the UK, my first encounter with the police was very positive. In Nigeria, the police would rob us. I remember officers stealing my brother’s shoes and watch. It’s a very poor country, so people do all sorts of things,” she stated.
Her remarks have sparked controversy, with many Nigerians—including Vice President Kashim Shettima—accusing her of misrepresenting the country and unfairly portraying its leadership.
Akinwande’s Response
In reaction to Badenoch’s claims, Akinwande recorded a video of himself purchasing a new pair of shoes and a wristwatch from a store in the UK. He then proceeded to the Conservative Party headquarters, where he handed over the items to security personnel, requesting that they be delivered to Badenoch.
At the end of the video, he wrote:
“On behalf of every proud Nigerian who felt genuinely hurt by those unfounded disparaging remarks about the Nigerian Police, we ‘buy back’ the stolen shoes and watch! (I hope it fits, tho..).”
The video quickly went viral on social media before being taken down.
Who is James Akinwande?
According to his Instagram profile, Akinwande serves as the international manager for well-known Nigerian comedian Kenny Blaq.
His symbolic act has been widely discussed online, with many Nigerians expressing support for his gesture, while others continue to debate Badenoch’s comments and their broader implications.
