Nigerian Troops Eliminate Turji’s Second-in-Command, Inflict Heavy Casualties on Terrorist Group
The Nigerian military has intensified its counterterrorism operations, dealing a significant blow to the notorious terrorist leader, Bello Turji, and his network.
According to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), troops from Operation Fansan Yamma successfully eliminated Aminu Kanawa, Turji’s second-in-command, in a recent offensive between January 20 and 21, 2025.
A statement by the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, confirmed that several of Turji’s key allies sustained fatal injuries, including his younger brother, Dosso, and a top associate, Danbokolo.
Heavy Losses for Terrorist Group
In addition to Kanawa, the military neutralized several other high-ranking terrorists, including Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon-Saniya-Yafi-Bahaushe.
More than 24 fleeing fighters from Turji’s camp were also eliminated in Gebe, Isa Local Government Area (LGA) of Sokoto State, and Gidan Rijiya in Shinkafi LGA, Zamfara State.
Another Notorious Terrorist Eliminated
During the operation, troops targeted Fakai high ground, where they killed Suleiman, a close associate of the late terrorist leader Halilu Sububu. Suleiman, who had previously led reinforcements for Turji’s forces, was eliminated in the attack.
“This is a major setback for the terrorist network operating in Northwest Nigeria, significantly weakening their military strength and ability to carry out further attacks,” said General Buba.
Turji on the Run After Son is Killed
The military’s offensive has put Turji under immense pressure. Just three days earlier, troops stormed his Fakai Hills camp, killing his son in a fierce gun battle.
A January 17, 2025, clearance operation across Shinkafi, Kagara, Fakai, Moriki, Maiwa, and Chindo led to heavy casualties among Turji’s fighters and the destruction of their logistics hub.
“The cowardly terrorist leader, Bello Turji, abandoned his son and fighters, escaping the battlefield as troops overpowered his men,” Buba stated.
Further Gains Against Terrorist Networks
In a related operation, the military destroyed the camp of another terrorist kingpin, Idi Mallam, located in Zango Kagara Forest.
Troops neutralized three terrorists, arrested three suspected collaborators, and recovered:
• Two machine guns
• One AK-47 rifle with a magazine (loaded with 11 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition)
• 61 rustled cattle
• 44 stolen sheep, among other contraband.
Military Vows to Sustain Momentum
The Nigerian military has reaffirmed its commitment to wiping out terrorist elements and restoring peace to Zamfara, Sokoto, and surrounding states.
“Our troops will not relent until these criminals are completely destroyed, and citizens can live in safety and security,” Buba assured.
