I’m still ready to play for Super Eagles – Balogun

Leon Balogun Clarifies Super Eagles Future: “I Haven’t Retired”

Rangers defender Leon Balogun has confirmed that he has not retired from international football and remains available for selection by the Super Eagles.

Balogun last played for Nigeria in June 2022, featuring in a 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against São Tomé and Príncipe, where the Super Eagles secured a dominant 10-0 victory.

Since then, the 36-year-old has not been called up, largely due to fitness concerns. However, his impressive performances for Rangers this season have reignited discussions about his potential return to the national team.

Still Committed to Nigeria

Speaking to Brila FM, Balogun clarified that he has never turned down a call-up and remains eager to represent Nigeria.

“It’s not that I declined an invitation. Unfortunately, just before the World Cup break, I suffered an injury that was initially expected to heal in a few weeks, but complications extended my recovery,” he explained.

“I wasn’t fit at the time, and even after recovering, I suffered a relapse. But since then, I haven’t had any long-term injury issues.”

Reaffirming his availability, Balogun added:

“I’ve always been available. I never announced my retirement from international football. The people who need to know are aware that I’m still very much willing and ambitious to play for Nigeria.”

The former Brighton & Hove Albion defender has earned 46 caps for Nigeria and has scored one goal for the national team.
