Jubilation in Mpu Community as Beatrice Ekweremadu Returns from UK Prison
The Mpu community in Aninri Local Government Area, Enugu State, erupted in celebration on Wednesday following the return of Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President Senator Ike Ekweremadu, from a United Kingdom prison.
Sources confirmed that Mrs. Ekweremadu, who was sentenced to four years and six months in May 2023 for her involvement in an organ trafficking case, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday.
She, along with her husband and a medical doctor, Dr. Obinna Obeta, was convicted by a UK court over an alleged plot to harvest the kidney of a 21-year-old Lagos street trader for their ailing daughter, Sonia.
Community Celebrates Ekweremadu’s Release
During a community-wide celebration, the President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Benjamin Chijioke, described Mrs. Ekweremadu’s return as a major relief for the people of Mpu.
“Our joy knows no bounds. Today is a great day for us,” Chijioke stated. “Since morning, there has been widespread jubilation across all villages.”
He emphasized that many community members, especially those who had benefitted from the Ekweremadu family’s philanthropy, were moved to tears of joy.
The festivities coincided with the community’s Orie market day, transforming the marketplace into a scene of celebration.
“We thank God and pray for divine intervention so that our distinguished leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will also return home in good health soon,” he added. “His absence has been a huge setback for our people.”
Calls for Ike Ekweremadu’s Release
The councillor for Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin, also expressed gratitude for Beatrice Ekweremadu’s return, noting that the absence of the Ekweremadus had created a significant gap in the community.
“It feels like a public holiday in Mpu today,” Edwin remarked. “The news of her return has filled everyone with joy. We will continue to pray until our leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, rejoins his family.”
