Gunmen Assassinate Celestial Church Pastor During Sunday Service in Ogun
A tragic incident unfolded on Sunday as gunmen, believed to be hired assassins, stormed a Celestial Church of Christ (CCC) in Idiroko, a border town in Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State, and shot dead the presiding pastor during a church service.
The victim, identified as Yomi Adetula, was attacked while delivering his sermon at approximately 11 a.m. inside his church.
Brazen Attack in Broad Daylight
Eyewitnesses recounted that six armed assailants, dressed in Celestial Church garments and carrying AK-47 rifles, entered the Hebrew Celestial Church located at Odo Eran, Old Garage Road, Idiroko. They reportedly opened fire on the pastor, ensuring he was dead before further mutilating his body inside the church.
Victim’s Background and Possible Motive
Further reports revealed that the deceased was the Idiroko Unit Commander of the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps (So-SAFE Corps), a state-funded community security outfit.
While the exact motive for the killing remains unclear, sources suggest that Adetula had been in a long-standing conflict with a smuggling syndicate operating around the Idiroko border. Due to security threats, he was reportedly transferred to Abuja (Federal Capital Territory) in December 2024.
Church members also disclosed that in December, suspected smugglers forcefully shut down his church, an incident believed to be linked to his security work.
Security Agencies Vow to Track Down Killers
The State Commander of So-SAFE Corps, Soji Ganzalo, confirmed the killing, expressing deep shock over the assassination. He assured that the Corps would support security agencies in their investigation and provide any necessary intelligence to help apprehend those responsible.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the murder, as the community remains in shock over the brutal attack inside a place of worship.
