The Yobe State Police Command has arrested a suspected bandit leader in Ngalda, located in Fika Local Government Area, following a violent robbery that claimed seven lives and left 11 others injured.
The arrest was made in connection with an attack on Ngalda Market on Monday, which authorities believe was orchestrated by the suspect.
Police Confirm Arrest and Recovery of Weapons
In a statement released on Tuesday in Damaturu, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, confirmed the arrest and disclosed that officers recovered a locally made pistol and three cartridges from the suspect.
“On January 20, 2025, at approximately 9:00 PM, a group of six armed robbers stormed three shops at Ngalda Market,” Abdulkarim stated.
“The attack resulted in seven fatalities and eleven injuries, with the criminals escaping with approximately ₦16.5 million.”
Community Response and Police Investigation
Local youths in the area reportedly mobilized in retaliation, managing to neutralize three of the assailants, while the remaining three fled with injuries.
Authorities have since evacuated the injured victims and bodies to the General Hospital in Fika for medical attention and autopsies.
In response, Yobe State Commissioner of Police, Garba Ahmed, has ordered an immediate investigation into the attack and urged residents to remain calm.
“He has directed security personnel to track down the remaining members of the criminal syndicate and has called on the public to assist the police with credible information,” Abdulkarim added.
