Breaking: Ekweremadu’s wife released from UK prison, jubilation rocks Enugu community

Beatrice Ekweremadu Released from UK Prison, Returns to Nigeria

Mrs. Beatrice Ekweremadu, wife of former Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has been released from a United Kingdom prison and has returned to Nigeria.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed to PUNCH Online that Beatrice, who was sentenced to five years in prison in the UK, arrived in Nigeria on Tuesday and is currently in Abuja.

Her release has sparked celebrations in her hometown of Mpu, located in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State. Reports indicate that residents are rejoicing over her return, expressing gratitude and relief.

Beatrice, her husband, and Dr. Obinna Obeta were convicted in 2023 by a UK court for their involvement in an organ-trafficking case, leading to varying prison sentences.

During the community-wide celebration, the President of Mpu Town Union Federated, Benjamin Chijioke, described her release as a significant relief to the entire community. He expressed hope that Senator Ekweremadu and their son would soon be reunited with their family in good health.

“Our joy as the people of Mpu knows no bounds. It is a great day for us. Since morning, there has been jubilation across all villages,” Chijioke said.

“People are shedding tears of joy, especially those who relied on the family’s philanthropy. Today is our Orie market day, and the entire market was filled with excitement and celebrations. We thank God and pray for divine intervention so that our distinguished leader, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, will soon return to his family. Their absence has been a major setback for our community, and we have missed them greatly.”

Similarly, the Councillor of Mpu Ward, Ogbuka Edwin, expressed gratitude for Beatrice’s return, emphasizing that the absence of the Ekweremadus had left a noticeable void in the community.

“Today feels like a public holiday in Mpu. The news of her release brought immense joy. The absence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife created a significant gap in our community,” Edwin said.

“We will not relent in our prayers until our leader is reunited with his family. We trust in God’s power to make this happen. It is a time of celebration.”

The Ekweremadu family’s case has remained a subject of widespread discussion both in Nigeria and abroad, with many continuing to hope for a positive resolution for the former Deputy Senate President.
