One killed, houses burnt in Ebonyi communal clash

Violent Clash in Ebonyi Community Leaves One Dead, Several Houses Razed

At least one person has been killed, and over ten houses were set ablaze following a violent attack in Ndieguzu Agalegu Omege, a community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, on Saturday night.

Reports indicate that multiple individuals sustained injuries during the incident, which was allegedly carried out by suspected hoodlums.

Cause of the Conflict

The unrest reportedly stemmed from tensions between residents of Omege Agalagu and Ukwuinyima within the local council. While the exact cause of the latest clash remains unclear, a community source suggested that it was linked to an unresolved dispute dating back to November 2024, when a woman who was allegedly raped and murdered was buried.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, described the extent of the destruction:

“More than 10 houses and property worth millions of naira have been reduced to ashes. The government needs to intervene.”

Police Confirmation and Response

The Ebonyi State Police Command confirmed the casualty on Sunday. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, the crisis was triggered by a fight between two youths from the rival communities, during which one individual from Omege was fatally stabbed.

“He later died in the hospital, which led to retaliation from his community. In response, some houses, particularly those with thatched roofs, were set on fire,” Ukandu stated.

The Police swiftly mobilized to prevent further escalation, restoring order to the affected area. Ukandu also confirmed that law enforcement officers are maintaining security in the community, and an investigation has been launched into the incident.

The individual responsible for the fatal stabbing has been arrested, and authorities have assured that justice will be served.
