DJ Jimmy Jatt Opens Up About Kidney Transplant and Health Struggles
Renowned Nigerian disc jockey, Oluwaforijimi Amu, popularly known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has shared his battle with chronic kidney disease and his eventual kidney transplant.
The veteran DJ, who first revealed his successful kidney transplant in 2022, spoke candidly about his health journey during a recent interview on Channels TV’s Rubbin’ Minds with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu.
Losing His Sight and Kidney Disease Diagnosis
Jimmy Jatt disclosed that his health struggles began in 2020, shortly after he decided to explore life outside Nigeria. Having spent most of his years in Lagos, he had made a conscious decision in 2019 to travel more and experience different parts of the world.
However, his plans took an unexpected turn when he started experiencing serious health issues.
“In 2020, I started having health challenges. At the time, there were travel restrictions, so I was still in Nigeria. I lost my sight and had to undergo surgery to regain it,” he recalled.
Following his recovery, he proceeded with his relocation plans and moved to the United States. While there, doctors diagnosed him with chronic kidney disease, leading to a period of dialysis treatments before he eventually returned to Nigeria for a kidney transplant.
“After the transplant, I decided to lay low for a while to fully recover. Once I was discharged, I left Nigeria again. During my time abroad, I continued DJing in America and Europe, but I felt it was time to return home, so I came back in December.”
Cause of His Kidney Disease
Addressing misconceptions about kidney disease, DJ Jimmy Jatt emphasized that lifestyle choices are not always the cause. He clarified that he has never smoked and had already quit alcohol long before his diagnosis.
Instead, he revealed that his kidney disease was a result of diabetes, shedding light on the need for increased awareness and regular health checkups.
