Djimon Hounsou Discusses Financial Struggles and Racism in Hollywood

I’m still struggling financially. I’m definitely underpaid," the actor explained.

Djimon Hounsou Opens Up About Financial Struggles and Racism in Hollywood

Beninese-American actor Djimon Hounsou, renowned for his compelling performances in films such as Gladiator and Blood Diamond, has recently spoken about his ongoing financial struggles despite over two decades in the film industry.

In an interview on CNN’s African Voices Changemakers, Hounsou revealed that despite his extensive career and multiple Oscar nominations, he continues to face financial difficulties, which he attributes to being underpaid in Hollywood.

“I’m still struggling to make a living. I’ve been in the filmmaking business for over two decades, with two Oscar nominations and many blockbuster films, yet I’m still financially struggling. I’m definitely underpaid,” Hounsou stated, expressing his frustration.

Facing Racism and Being Overlooked in Hollywood

Hounsou also addressed the racism he has encountered in the industry. He recalled a moment when he was nominated for a Golden Globe but was snubbed by the Academy Awards, suggesting that industry bias played a role.

“I was nominated for the Golden Globe, but they ignored me for the Oscars because they assumed I had just come off the boat and the streets,” he said. “Even though I had proven myself, they just didn’t see me as an actor worthy of respect.”

Despite growing discussions about diversity and representation in Hollywood, Hounsou believes there is still a long way to go before true equality is achieved.

“This idea of diversity is still largely conceptual. Systemic racism won’t disappear overnight,” he remarked.

A Career Marked by Acclaim, Yet Ongoing Struggles

Over the years, Hounsou has delivered critically acclaimed performances in films such as Amistad, Constantine, Guardians of the Galaxy, Aquaman, and Furious 7. While he has earned a dedicated fan base and industry recognition, his candid revelations shed light on the persistent challenges faced by actors of color in Hollywood.
