Jessica Simpson’s Divorce: A New Chapter After Weight Loss and Self-Discovery
Jessica Simpson’s decision to end her marriage to Eric Johnson reportedly came after a transformative period in her life, during which she shed 100 pounds and rediscovered her confidence.
According to an insider who spoke exclusively to Page Six, the singer’s dramatic weight loss sparked a profound shift in her mindset and self-image.
A Newfound Sense of Freedom
“She started feeling like she was 21 again—except this time, she had the freedom she never experienced in her early years,” the source revealed, referencing Simpson’s previous marriage to Nick Lachey and their reality TV series Newlyweds in the early 2000s.
The insider further explained that, in the past, Simpson relied on extreme dieting and grueling workouts to maintain her figure. Now, with a healthier approach to weight loss, she began embracing a side of herself she had long suppressed.
“She never really had the chance to let loose and enjoy life in the way she wanted,” the source added.
Years of Struggles with Body Image
Simpson, now 44, has been candid about her lifelong battle with weight and body image. In her 2020 memoir Open Book, she revealed that she had lost and regained 100 pounds on three separate occasions.
Her struggles began at just 17 when music executive Tommy Mottola told her she needed to lose 15 pounds. At the time, she weighed 118 pounds at 5 feet 3 inches tall but resorted to diet pills to drop to a dangerously low 103 pounds. Those pills, she admitted, became a crutch for two decades.
However, in 2021, Simpson committed to a healthier path, rejecting speculation that she had used Ozempic for weight loss. “Oh Lord. I mean, it is not — it’s willpower,” she told Bustle last year.
Marriage Troubles and Mutual Discontent
While Simpson’s renewed confidence played a role in the split, sources suggest her marriage to Johnson, 45, had already been on shaky ground.
“To be fair to Jess, Eric had emotionally checked out—he’s been over it for a while now,” the insider claimed, adding that infidelity on either side wouldn’t be surprising.
Concerns about Simpson’s well-being also surfaced among her close friends and family, though they insisted she has remained sober since 2017.
Rumors of trouble between the couple first emerged last year when fans noticed their absence from each other’s social media. On January 13, Simpson confirmed the separation after 10 years of marriage, stating:
“Eric and I have been living separately, navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” she told People. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
Turning Heartbreak Into Music
Despite the emotional toll of the split, Simpson is reportedly channeling her feelings into new music—her first in 15 years.
“She’s been working on music for a while, but everything happening now has given her the push to fully commit,” a source previously told Page Six.
Journaling has long been a creative outlet for the singer, and some of her recent entries have evolved into songs centered on heartbreak and resilience.
“It’s been a deeply emotional time, but also an incredibly creative one for her,” the insider added.
Representatives for Simpson and Johnson have not publicly commented further on the separation.
