This marks her first role since playing Miss Hannigan in the 2014 remake of Annie. She revealed that her return to acting "made sense for my family" as they wanted to "switch it up a little bit".
Cameron Diaz, widely recognized for her performances in The Mask and There’s Something About Mary, recently reflected on her decade-long break from acting, calling it “the best 10 years of my life.” The 52-year-old actress stepped away from Hollywood in 2014 to prioritize her personal life, focusing on her roles as a mother and wife.
During a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show alongside Jamie Foxx, Diaz shared her experience of retirement, expressing her appreciation for the freedom and privacy it allowed. “Oh my God, I loved it. It was the best 10 years of my life,” she said, explaining how stepping away from the industry gave her the opportunity to fully enjoy life away from the spotlight.
Now, Diaz is making her return to acting with Foxx in the Netflix film Back in Action, her first role since portraying Miss Hannigan in the 2014 remake of Annie. She explained that resuming her career felt like the right decision for her family, saying they were ready for a change.
The actress, who first gained fame in 1994 with The Mask, revealed that she had been turning down roles for years before Hollywood eventually stopped approaching her. However, the chance to reunite with Foxx was too good to pass up. “If I’m going to leave my family for 10 hours a day, I want to do it with the most talented man in entertainment,” she said, praising her co-star, with whom she had previously worked on Annie.
Known for her roles in films like Charlie’s Angels, Shrek, and The Holiday, Diaz expressed her enduring love for acting. “It’s just a privilege to do this,” she said, explaining that she didn’t want to let go of the goodwill she had built over the years. “The passion I have for entertaining people and making movies that bring joy—if I don’t engage in that again, then I would be a fool.”
Having welcomed her second child with husband Benji Madden in March last year, Diaz hinted at the possibility of more projects in the future. “I’m back for at least this film,” she told Norton, adding, “Maybe this is just the beginning, maybe I’ll ease in, or maybe I’ll go full throttle! I don’t know.”
Beyond Back in Action, Diaz has also wrapped up filming for Outcome, an upcoming Apple TV+ black comedy starring Keanu Reeves and Jonah Hill.
