Police vow to enforce third party insurance compliance in A’Ibom from February 1

Akwa Ibom Police to Enforce Third-Party Insurance Compliance from February 1

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has announced plans to begin enforcing third-party insurance compliance across the state, starting February 1, 2025.

In a statement issued in Uyo on Sunday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, emphasized that the enforcement aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun.

She further explained that the initiative is backed by Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance Act, both of which mandate third-party insurance coverage for private vehicle owners using public roads.

Purpose of the Enforcement

According to John, the enforcement drive is aimed at:

Enhancing road user protection

Promoting accountability

Ensuring strict adherence to traffic regulations

Consequences for Non-Compliance

John warned that from February 1, any vehicle found without valid third-party insurance would be impounded and taken to the nearest police station. Owners will only be able to retrieve their vehicles upon presentation of valid insurance documents.

She also cautioned officers involved in the exercise against unethical practices such as extortion, urging them to conduct their duties professionally.

Understanding Third-Party Insurance

Third-party insurance is a compulsory policy designed to cover legal liabilities in the event of an accident. It provides financial protection for:

Injuries or death caused to other road users

Damage to another person’s property

However, it does not cover damages to the policyholder’s own vehicle or personal injuries.

This move by the Akwa Ibom State Police reinforces the commitment to road safety and legal compliance, ensuring that motorists fulfill their insurance obligations before using public roads.
