Interview with Sam Adaidu on the Tragic Death of Salome
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Sam Adaidu.
What was your relationship with Salome, the corps member killed by an Abuja gospel singer?
Salome was my niece—the daughter of my elder brother.
Are you satisfied with how the police are handling the case?
Yes, they are making efforts to ensure justice is served.
How far has the investigation progressed?
The suspect is being taken to court this Friday morning. Initially, I considered pushing for the case to be transferred to Abuja. However, I learned that Nasarawa State has strict laws on murder, with a death sentence as the penalty. Since this case is a clear act of murder and the state governor, Abdullahi Sule, has taken a keen interest in it, I see no need for the transfer. Additionally, the Minister for Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, met with the governor this morning regarding the case. I am confident that justice will be served by God’s grace.
How would you describe Salome’s character and values?
Salome was gentle and kind-hearted. She was not the outgoing type and avoided unnecessary social activities. Among her siblings, she was the closest to her father, and after he passed away on May 16, 2024, she remained deeply connected to him in spirit. She was never one to take risks, which makes her tragic end even more painful.
What do you have to say about the suspect’s claim regarding his relationship with Salome?
That is a complete lie. People like him manipulate and deceive young women, ultimately ruining their lives. There was no romantic relationship between them. In fact, when he was caught and beaten, he did not even know her full name. This clearly points to a case of abduction and murder.
Did Salome ever share any concerns about her personal life with you?
No, she never did.
What was your initial reaction when you heard about her death?
At first, I was told it was a road accident, so I assumed that was the cause. However, when I arrived at the scene and saw the reality, I was devastated. Honestly, if not for the law, I would not have taken this lightly. I am not the kind of person to accept such things easily. But maturity and understanding have helped me stay composed.
Can you elaborate on what you mean by that?
I mean that if not for restraint and legal considerations, things would have escalated. If we weren’t bound by the law, the suspect’s family would not have known peace.
Are you referring to retaliation?
Yes, I am talking about retaliation. I am not ashamed to admit it. When someone brutally kills another human being, dismembers them, and destroys their future, it is difficult for the family to remain calm.
How did Salome’s family, especially her mother, react to the news?
The police found Salome’s phone in the suspect’s house and used it to contact her mother, who was in the village at the time. When she called me, the news quickly spread. Right now, we are trying to manage her health and praying she remains strong.
What aspect of this incident was the hardest to process?
The most frustrating part is the suspect’s refusal to reveal the identities of his accomplices. He seems to be a professional killer who follows a code of silence, which makes the case even more distressing.
What is your message to the police regarding this case?
They need to intensify their investigation. They should analyze the suspect’s phone records to identify his contacts and communication history. Modern technology can help uncover the full truth.
Has this incident affected your ability to trust others?
Yes, absolutely. Even before this, I was cautious about trusting people. Now, I am even more guarded. No matter how close someone is to me, I remain careful.
What punishment do you believe the suspect, Timileyin Ajayi, deserves?
He should face the death penalty. His crime is unforgivable.
How do you assess the response from law enforcement so far?
They are handling it well. This case is heartbreaking, and anyone who sees the evidence would be deeply moved. Thankfully, the suspect is now in police custody.
What role should the government and community play in this matter?
This is no longer a personal tragedy; it has become a national concern. The government and society must work together to ensure justice is done.
How can this case raise awareness and prevent similar tragedies?
There should be a public execution of the perpetrator. Such a measure would serve as a deterrent to those involved in ritual killings and human trafficking.
How have you been coping with the loss of Salome?
It has been extremely difficult, but as a man, I have to stay strong. I am just trying to manage myself and move forward.
If you had the chance to speak with Salome now, what would you say?
She is gone. There is nothing more to say.
