NDLEA Arrests 251 Suspects for Drug-Related Crimes in Benue State

Benue NDLEA Commander Highlights 2024 Achievements

The Benue Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has confirmed the arrest of 251 suspects for various drug-related offences in 2024. The State Commander, Mrs. Esther Musa, disclosed this during an interview in Makurdi, the state capital.

Providing a breakdown of the arrests, Musa revealed that 220 of the suspects were male, while 31 were female. She also stated that out of the total number of suspects, 31 had been convicted and sentenced, 39 cases were dropped, while others remain under investigation or prosecution.

Seizures and Confiscated Drug Substances

The NDLEA commander reported significant seizures of illicit drugs and other exhibits during the year. Cannabis sativa, commonly known as marijuana, was the most frequently confiscated substance, with officers intercepting over one ton (175.723 kg) of the drug.

Other notable drug seizures included:

Tramadol – 43 kg

Fitamin – 0.27 kg

Diazopharm – 4.39 kg

Codeine syrup – 156.1 kg

Additionally, law enforcement officers recovered locally made pistols, ammunition, and explosives. These dangerous weapons were transferred to the Nigerian Army and Police for further investigation and security measures.

WADA Sensitisation Campaign and Advocacy Efforts

Musa emphasised that beyond arrests and seizures, the agency has been actively involved in its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) campaign. The initiative aims to educate the public on the dangers of drug use, trafficking, and cultivation. In 2024, the Benue NDLEA command organised 142 sensitisation programmes across schools, religious institutions, and local communities.

Stakeholders, including traditional leaders, law enforcement agencies, and youth groups, were also engaged to raise awareness about the devastating effects of substance abuse.

“Our supply reduction strategy focuses on sensitisation, advocacy, and enforcement. We believe it is more effective and cost-efficient to educate people about the dangers of drug abuse rather than just chasing down dealers,” Musa stated.

Call for Improved Rehabilitation Facilities

The NDLEA commander urged the Benue State Government and non-governmental organisations to support the agency by providing a standard rehabilitation centre for drug users.

She revealed that while the NDLEA has a mini-rehabilitation facility at its premises, it lacks adequate equipment and resources, particularly for female patients. Due to this limitation, requests for female rehabilitation cases have been turned down.

“As it stands, we don’t have facilities for female clients, and we have received several requests. Unfortunately, we have had to decline because we lack the resources to accommodate them,” she explained.

Musa called on Nigerian youths to avoid drug abuse, warning that substance addiction poses serious threats to their health, future, and overall well-being.

“Drugs can kill the star in you before your light even shines. Stay away from them,” she advised.

A Step Forward in the Fight Against Drug Abuse

The NDLEA’s achievements in Benue State reflect ongoing efforts to combat drug-related crimes through enforcement and education. With stronger partnerships and enhanced rehabilitation facilities, the agency hopes to create a safer and drug-free society.
